Make sure to measure twice, order once. Everything else does exactly as it says it does.OK, here is a comment of 0.1% of people out there, the amp in this - while adequate - has trouble producing midrange and there is the slightest interference from the transformer. This receiver is probably the best value you will find although I wish it had a few more HDMI inputs. I only noticed it with headphones.Oh, and don't forget that this thing is HUGE. I am a guy who is really into gadgets and gizmos. I also appreciate quality electronics and good value. You will have to really be an audiophile to notice any of this - and then probably only with fairly high end speakers.
I have paradigm Titans up front with a PSB center channel (pretty modest gear but it can take a beating), an old Paradigm PS1000 sub, and some old Polk wedge speakers in back. Some of the earlier 605 models had HDMI pass through/switching issues, but my model works great sending a 1080p signal from my PS3.I am a picky audiophile, so I do not recommend music on this. I only wish it had 1080p upconversion, but that's not a big deal for me since my PS3 already upconverts all my DVDs.The ability to use the 6 and 7 channels to bi-wire is a nice touch - wish I had better speakers for it.The back panel uses quality terminals and offers plenty of options to assign digital inputs.I find the interface somewhat cumbersome at times. That said, this is a great product at $600. It assumes I want to use DSP which is a complete bastardization of the original track, in my opinion.Overall, I recommend this product for the price. For movies, this thing blows it up.
I have to make several adjustments just to listen to a 2 channel audio track, for example. I purchased the 605 because I was on a budget and could not afford a better sounding HT receiver. With some looking, you may be able to pick it up for far lower. I can really ratchet the volume and the 605 keeps pumping it out giving my speakers everything they can handle.
Maybe I don't have enough ventilation in my cabinet, but my old Kenwood never got even close to being this hot in the same cabinet. My Onkyo was on standby, and even on standby, you could literally have fried an egg on this thing. Just the other day I opened my entertainment unit to watch a movie. I was also concerned with teh Blu-ray player that I had on the next shelf up, as the shelf itself was scorching.I now just unplug the unit when not in use, but I think that I'm going to be replacing with a much cooler Denon. After lots of research, and some great reviews here on Amazon and the AVS Forum, I decided upon the Onkyo 605 receiver. It has run perfectly and sounded great, however, this thing is so hot, it almost makes you worry about it being a fire hazard. I'm assuming that it has protection circuitry that cuts the unit off in the even of overheating, but as hot as it was, it would have to be melting the metal to hit this limit.
Combining this receiver with Klipisch speakers and my 52 inch Sony Bravia LCD and PS3; what a combination. Onkyo always delivers high quality receivers, and this one does not disappoint. I bought this receiver about 10 months ago; no complaints what so ever. The sound delivered by this receiver is outstanding; Great HDMI inputs as well as multiple other inputs for a wide variety uses.
The popping sound that randomly comes from the speakers is annoying and I am very disapponted with this product. So there is no warranty and no replacement. Have two other Sony receivers, never had a problem. I was also cheated by Onkyo to find out that the 605 is a terrible receiver. I bought mine in the US and brought to Brazil where I live. First and last time with Onkyo.
